Wednesday Night Racing

On Wednesday, May 10, we held our annual Skippers' Meeting at The Living Room to discuss the upcoming Wednesday Night Racing Season. Thank you to everyone who attended! Here are the highlights of the meeting and what you need to know for the coming season:

  • It's a new year and new racing rules apply. Please see the link in the Racing News for Dave Perry's interpretation of the major difference between the 2013-2016 and the 2017-2020  RRS.
  • The first race is May 24th, right around the corner.
  • Due to Sail Boston, there will be no race on June 21 - a make-up date will be added to the end of the season on September 27.
  • Our rumble will be June 28th in the outer harbor.
  • We will be using Arbitration as defined in the RRS Appendix T as an alternative for protests. Please familiarize yourself with the SI's for more details.
  • We are looking for volunteers again for race committee. Boats that volunteer will get an extra drop during the series during which they volunteer, and the volunteer will receive a CYC logo.

It's shaping up to be a great season - I'm looking forward to seeing everyone out on the water!

Racing Rules of Sailing 2017 - 2020

Every 4 years, World Sailing updates the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS). 2017 marks the beginning of the next 4 year rules period. For the past 8 years, the changes to the rules have been mostly to simplify certain rules and make it easier to apply them on the water in real-time. For the 2017-2020 revision, not much has changed, but it's still worth knowing them. Over the next few months we'll discuss some of the changes here, but the study version from World Sailing is available right here. As an FYI, the 2017 New Years Race will be conducted under the existing rules.

For a list of the major changes, check out this piece by Dave Perry.

07 October 2016

The CYC racing season is officially over - final results are available on the Wednesday Night page and Regattaman.com. I want to personally thank all of the skippers who made the season such a great one - your dedication to the sport makes my job easy. Stay tuned for details about the CYC Annual Meeting / Brunch / Awards Ceremony, which is scheduled for Sunday, November 13th at the Living Room.

Don't forget that the first race of the year is January 1, 2017, the Jack Roberts Memorial NYD race. The race will be run under the 2013-2016 RRS; however, don't forget that this is a "change" year for the RRS - a study version is available at this link . CYC will be looking into holding a rules seminar this winter to discuss the differences between the old rules and the new rules.

See you at the brunch,

Lance
